Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced the addition of right-handed pitcher Justin Bristow. As a corresponding roster move, right-handed reliever Jose Pina has been promoted to Class-A Advanced Daytona of the Florida State League.
Bristow is coming back from an ulnar nerve transposition that caused him to miss the beginning of the season. He will start for the Chiefs on Sunday against Cedar Rapids at 2:00 pm. A fifth round draft selection by the Cubs in 2008 out of East Carolina, Bristow pitched in six games combined between Mesa and Boise last season. In that brief stint, the 6'4, 215 pounder was 2-1 with a 9.00 ERA in six appearances and four starts. He went 13 total innings in those six appearances, walking six batters and punching out 15. The Richmond, VA native attended both Auburn University as well as East Carolina University, where he made the full-time conversion to pitcher in his last year there in 2008. The 22 year-old was originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 22nd round of the 2005 draft, and was at one time ranked the 4th best prospect on Baseball America's Top 100 High School Players list.
Pina moves up to Daytona after starting the season in the Chiefs bullpen. In four outings this year, Pina was 0-0 with a 22.50 ERA and his first professional save. The 23-year-old returned to Peoria this season where he also pitched in 2007 and 2008. In his first two seasons with the Chiefs, Pina appeared in 34 games, including 27 starts. Pina was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2002 and pitched in the Dominican Summer League in 2003 and 2004. He made his US debut in 2005 with Mesa and then pitched for Boise in 2006. Pina was a Chiefs starter in 2007 before injuring his arm in August. He started last season with Boise before joining the Chiefs in July for the rest of the season.
The Chiefs return home Saturday night after a 1-6 road trip to begin a four-game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Tickets are available for all four home games with Sunday's contest beginning at 2:00 pm, Monday at 6:30 pm and Tuesday at 11:00 am. On Sunday kids 12 and under eat for free and then get to run the bases after the game and collect player autographs. All tickets to Monday's game are half-price and on Tuesday those 60 and older can get $6.00 tickets.
