Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, Ind.-Alfredo Marte hit a home run and drove in three runs and Ryan Cook tossed seven strong innings as the South Bend Silver Hawks defeated the Dayton Dragons 9-3 on Saturday. The Dragons fell to 2-13 on the season with the loss and have not won in eight road contests.
South Bend scored once in the first inning before Marte belted his first home run of the year with a runner on base in the third to make it 3-0. The Silver Hawks added another run in the fourth before exploding for five runs in the fifth, keyed by Justin Parker's two-run double to jump out to a 9-0 lead.
Cook (2-0) did not allow a Dragons batter to reach base until Byron Wiley doubled leading off the fifth inning. Cook retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced over the first six innings before the Dragons scored against him in the seventh on a double by Jose Gualdron, a single by Kyle Day to move Gualdron to third, and a sacrifice fly by Wiley to score Gualdron and make it 9-1.
The Dragons scored twice in the ninth inning, keyed by Cody Puckett's double and a run-scoring single by Wiley, to close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Leonardo Astorga (0-3) took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits in four innings. He struck out one and walked no one.
Dayton finished with six hits. Wiley went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in to raise his batting average to .375.
