
Kernels rally comes up short in 6-5 loss to Peoria

A ninth inning rally came up short as the Cedar Rapids Kernels dropped the first game of a four game series to the Peoria Chiefs, 6-5, on Saturday night at O'Brien Field in Peoria. The game was delayed for 32 minutes in the 8th inning due to rain.
The Kernels outhit Peoria, 12-8, as seven of the nine Kernel starters had hits. Matt Crawford was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI and Gabe Jacobo was 2 for 4 with a solo home run. Hector Estrella and Beau Brooks added doubles and Alexi Amarista was 2 for 5 as the DH with a stolen base.
Kernels starter Ryan Chaffee allowed four runs on five hits and struck out four in four innings of work in a no-decision effort. Reliever Kevin Nabors (0-3) was tagged with the loss, giving up two runs on three hits over two innings. Mike Kohn and Vladimir Veras threw an inning of scoreless relief.
Peoria erased a 4-1 Kernels lead with two home runs in the fourth inning, one by Josh Vitters and the other by Nelson Perez to tie the game at 4-4. They added two more runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Rebel Ridling and RBI single by Kyler Burke. Chief starter Marcus Hatley (1-0) allowed four runs on eight hits over 5 innings for the win and Ryan Buchter quelled a Kernel rally in the ninth for his second save.
