SEATTLE- The Chicago Fire fell 1-0 to the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday night at CenturyLink Field.Matchcenter
Chad Marshall put the Sounders on the board in the 24th minute. Andreas Ivanschitz played the ball in from a corner kick and the 6'4 defender got up to beat goalkeeper Sean Johnson with his head.
The Fire had their strongest chance to finish in the 31st minute. Michael de Leeuw dummied a Luis Solignac pass across the 18 to a waiting David Accam. Accam's shot was blocked, but fell to a waiting Razvan Cocis. Cocis fired a low shot from distance, but Seattle 'keeper Stefan Frei dove left in time to deny the Romanian's attempt.
Johnson thwarted rookie forward Jordan Morris on an open look in the 40th minute to prevent the Sounders out of the net before half. Morris took a touch to Johnson's right, before opening himself up to finish. Johnson sprawled out to get a leg on the shot, deflecting it wide and helping send the match to halftime at 1-0.
Seattle had a chance to double their lead in the 73rd minute. Defender Joevin Jones played a ball from the left for Nelson Valdez, but the Paraguayan couldn't get a touch to it as it continued wide of Johnson's net. Both sides would trade half-chances as the second half came to close, but the hosts would ultimately claim all three points.
Wednesday's match snapped a streak of 10 straight outings on the scoresheet for the Fire, who had not been shut out since July 23.
The Fire are back on the road this Saturday, Oct. 1, when they head to Columbus to take on Crew SC. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT with coverage on CSN Chicago Plus and 97.5 FM Poder.
