April 16, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
Down 3-0 with 4:48 left in regulation, the Charlotte Checkers stormed back to tie the game and beat Peoria 4-3 in overtime on Tuesday night at Carver Arena. Brett Sutter (2g, 2a) helped erased a 44-save effort by Mike McKenna and two-point nights by T.J. Hensick, Andrew Murray and Evgeny Grachev.
Hensick opened the scoring at 8:08 of the first period. After a feed from Murray in the corner, Hensick stepped out from the corner and fired a shot over the shoulder of John Muse. In the second period, Nathan Longpre put Peoria up 2-0 with just 29.6 seconds left. Newcomers Scott Pitt and Drew Olson worked the puck to Longpre in front, who dragged it and fired it inside the post. The Rivermen extended their lead at 14:37 of the third period on the 11th of the season from Evgeny Grachev. Setup on a beautiful pass from behind the net by Hensick, Grachev fired home the one-timer from the high-slot.
The Charlotte Checkers took just 3:14 to tie the game. Only 35 seconds after falling behind 3-0, Sutter beat McKenna on a wraparound rebound attempt for his 17th of the season. At 17:55, with a 6-on-5 attack, Justin Shugg brought the Checkers within one by forcing in a rebound. Then at 18:26, Zack Boychuk pushed one through McKenna's legs to tie the game.
In overtime, Sutter took just 61 seconds to end the game. He fired a shot from along the ice that snuck under his pads for his 21st of the season.
Charlotte outshot Peoria 47-29 and went 0-for-5 on the power play. Peoria went 0-for-1 on the man advantage.
The Rivermen hit the road on Friday to play the Grand Rapids Griffins at 6 p.m. before ending the season at home on Saturday and Sunday. All games can be heard on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
