Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers survived a late-game push by the Augusta Lynx to pick up a 3-2 win Thursday night in front of 4,889 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Brandon Cullen was named the First Star of the game after scoring an unassisted goal and notching an assist.
The Checkers effectively killed a penalty which was called at the 17:47 mark of the third period to secure the 3-2 win. The Checkers not only killed the penalty, but survived a Lynx two-man advantage as Augusta pulled their goalie at the 18:48 mark of the third period.
The Checkers did not allow a power play goal, despite five chances by the Lynx. Charlotte goalie Chris Holt earned the Second Star of the game making 34 saves. Holt picked up his third win of the season (3-2-0).
The Checkers scored first on a goal by Jake Ortmeyer, assisted by Ryan Glenn and Cullen, and went up 2-0 on Cullen's goal early in the second period. Mike Bayrack's goal at the 3:13 mark of the second period gave the Checkers a 3-0 cushion, but the Lynx answered just over a minute later with their first goal of the game.
B.J. Gaustad scored a short handed goal cutting the Checkers lead to3-1 and a late-second period goal by Augusta's Dan Sullivan cut the lead to one at 3-2. But the fine play of the Checkers penalty kill unit secured the win 14th win of the season.
Augusta goalie Jason Wolfe stopped 18-of-21 shots by Charlotte.
The Checkers move to 14-10-2 while Augusta goes to 12-14-2.
The Checkers will be back in action at home Monday to host the Greenville Grrrowl at 7:00 pm. For more information, or tickets, call the Checkers Front Office at 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
