Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The E-Center in West Valley City, Utah hosted the Victoria Salmon Kings and Utah Grizzlies tonight, to begin the final two game series before Christmas. Utah beat Victoria 4-1.

The first period started with high paced action but neither team was able to generate much offense. The Salmon Kings got an injection of energy from Dallas Anderson's fisticuffs and after a solid penalty kill Victoria opened the scoring on a powerplay.

Victoria scored on a tic-tac-toe passing play started by Defenseman Steve Lingren at the point. Lingren passed to Mike Wirll who found Seth Leonard all alone in front of Grizzlies Goaltender Alfie Michaud. Leonard easily put the puck into the empty net to give the Salmon Kings the 1-0 lead.

With a Salmon King in the penalty box the Grizzlies 3rd best powerplay unit went to work. Matt Craig scored on a carbon copy of the Salmon Kings marker, as he was set up on a tight three-way passing play by Forward Ryan Kinasewich and Defenseman Tom Reimann.

The teams played quietly through the second period until the 18:30 mark when Grizzlies Forward Colt King picked up a puck in the slot. King walked out from behind a screen and ripped it past Salmon Kings Goaltender Rob McVicar.

Down 2-1 Victoria gave the Grizzlies a powerplay with just under a minute to go in the period. Defenseman Ed Hill took a slap-shot from the point and beat McVicar sending the teams to the dressing room, with Utah up 3-1.

The Grizzlies finished the scoring in third period when Forward Travis Rycroft gave a yeoman's effort in the Salmon Kings zone. Rycroft wrestled the puck free on the side boards and found Trevor Baker at the top of the circle. Baker stepped into the pass with a one-timer and beat McVicar clean to give the Grizzlies a three goal lead.

The Salmon Kings finished one for three on the powerplay while the Grizzlies converted two of four chances with the man advantage in Michaud's tenth win of the season, in front of 2743 at the E-Center.

The Salmon Kings play the final game of the two game set against the Grizzlies tomorrow night in Salt Lake City. Victoria will complete the 2005 portion of their schedule in Alaska, before returning home in the New Year to host the Fresno Falcons on January 5th, 6th and 7th.
