Lyns rally but can't down Checkers

December 22, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

The Charlotte Checkers scored the first three goals of the contest and held on to win 3-2 over the Augusta Lynx on Thursday night at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena.

After moving ahead 1-0 in the first period on a Jake Ortmayer power play goal, the Checkers moved out in front by three with a pair of goals just 44 seconds apart from Brandon Cullen and Mike Bayrack.

Far from out of the game, the Lynx (12-14-2) would strike back for a shorthanded goal at 4:40, with BJ Gaustad waiting Checkers (14-10-2) netminder Chris Holt down to the ice before sliding the puck into the net to make it 3-1 from Brian Passmore. Augusta continued to build momentum through the period, finally scoring an even strength goal off the stick of Dan Sullivan at 17:36 with assists going to Joel Stepp and Nicolas Corbeil. With the points, each player extended his own personal scoring streak. Sullivan now has points in his last six contests, Stepp his last 11, and Corbeil his last thirteen.

From there, however, Charlotte would shut down the Lynx attack, even when Augusta had a late power play advantage and pulled Wolfe for a sixth attacker. Holt was strong down the stretch, making several key saves including a sharp angle chance for Passmore with under a minute remaining to preserve the win.

Augusta finished the contest 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Checkers finished 1-for-3.

The Lynx will now break for the Christmas holiday, and come back to action at home on Tuesday, December 27th against the Florida Everblades. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 pm, with a Post-Game Party At The Patch following the contest at the Cotton Patch, 816 Cotton Lane. Tickets are on sale now through the Lynx office at (706) 724-4423, all TicketMaster locations, and on line at www.TicketMaster.com.
