Charlotte Checkers News Release

Fort, Myers, FL. - The Checkers played their third game in three nights after making an eleven hour bus ride to Florida to play a well rested Florida Everblades team. Despite great goaltending and a admirable first period, they couldn't stop a rolling Florida team and dropped the contest by a score of 6-3.

Florida started the scoring in the first period on a two-on-one shorthanded rush down the ice. It was a wrist shot by Florida forward Colin Nicholson that beat Checkers rookie goaltender Parker Van Buskirk at 8:13. The Checker tallied the next two goals and Chris Capraro factored in on both. First, Capraro took a nice pass from Brad Ralph and knifed the puck between the legs of Florida netminder David Leggio at 14:28. Charlotte went up 2-1 on the power-play when Chris Capraro sent a nice pass right to the stick of Jeff Miles who lifted it over the left leg-pad of Leggio and into the net at 19:25. After the first period, Charlotte held a 2-1 advantage.

During the second period, the Everblades managed to recapture a one goal lead with two goals. The first came off a deflection from a Dominic D'Amour point shot by rookie Mike Reich at 11:24. Florida took a 3-2 lead during a power play when a slap-shot from the blueline by Everblades defenseman Peter Metcalf found its way past Van Buskirk at 14:25.

During the final period, Florida received goals from Milan Gijac at 12:24 and Mark Lee during a power-play at 13:12. This put Florida up 5-2 before a quick goal just 14 seconds later from Checkers forward Matt Shepke at 13:26 brought it to a 5-3 game. It wasn't enough however and Florida would get one more goal from Ernie Hartlieb at 14:06 giving them a 6-3 decision.

The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on March 30 against the Mississippi Sea Wolves at 7 P.M. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. For season ticket information, please call 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
