Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs finished up their regular season home schedule by not being able to make a one-goal third period lead stand up against the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night. Cincinnati came away with a 2-1 win.

Johnstown's record stands at 37-27-4, and with 78 points the team remained in a playoff spot thanks to two more wins than the Wheeling Nailers who also have 78 points.

An aggressive high-tempered first period of play provided a playoff atmosphere for all those in attendance at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink. The first period included a defensive battle as Kris Mayotte turned aside each of Cincinnati's eight threats on net. Although defense was the theme of this period, with time expiring Petr Pohl added an offensive strike on the power play with only a second left on the clock. This goal came as Pohl jammed in a rebound that was sent on net by Trevor Hendrikx from the point. Andrew Sarauer kept the rebound alive for Pohl to cash in, giving the Chiefs a 1-0 advantage at intermission.

Johnstown held onto its lead as the defensive battle continued through the second period of play. Mayotte's impressive goaltending allowed the Chiefs to keep their single-goal advantage. Nearing the end of the period Mayotte made a superman-like diving save to rob the Cyclones of a tying goal.

The Chiefs battled all game but their one-goal lead failed to hold up as the third period perused. At 6:03 Barret Ehgoetz gave the Cyclones the equalizer. With the game tied Cincinnati quickly struck once more when they cashed in on the power play from Matt Syroczynski at 7:07, stealing the game-long lead from the Chiefs. This 2-1 Cyclone lead would hold up as the Chiefs were unable to win their 22nd home game of the season.

Kris Mayotte turned away 33 shots in taking the loss and the Chiefs' power play went 1-for-8.
