Charlotte Checkers News Release
(Charlotte, North Carolina â Saturday, January 10 ) The Checkers led all night long but couldn't hold any of their leads, finally losing 6-5 in a shootout to the Augusta Lynx Saturday night at Cricket Arena. Charlotte had two-goal leads twice and then a one-goal lead late in regulation, but each time the Lynx came back to tie. Greg Jacina's second goal of the game with just 1:03 remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime and then the shootout where Augusta prevailed. Ryan Cuthbert had two goals for the Checkers and Steve MacIntyre earned his first goal of the season. Louis Goulet and Paul Vincent each scored in the shootout for Augusta, while the Checkers were blanked in four attempts by Lynx goaltender Greg Naumenko. David St, Germain took the loss in goal for Charlotte with 25 saves.
"I'm really disappointed tonight," commented Checkers Coach Don MacAdam. "A two goal lead in your own building should hold. We had several giveaways and took some bad penalties too."
Charlotte jumped on the Lynx just 2:03 into the contest as Cuthbert notched his sixth goal of the season for a 1-0 Checkers lead. At 9:05 MacIntyre scored his first goal of the campaign on a power play and Charlotte increased its lead to 2-0. The Lynx got one back before the period would end as Scott Kelman's shot eluded St. Germain at 16:15 to cut the Charlotte lead to 2-1.
In the second period the Checkers got their two-goal back as Cuthbert followed up his own shot for his second goal of the game and a 3-1 Charlotte advantage. Augusta then roared back to tie the game at 3-3 with two goals by Jacina and Todd Bennett in a 41 second span. The Checkers then exercised command and went back ahead with two goals in less than a minute. Allan Egeland and Kevin Caulfield scored 28 seconds apart as Charlotte regained its two-goal lead after two periods with a 5-3 advantage.
In the third period the Lynx cut Charlotte's lead to 5-4 as Jonathan Gagnon notched his 10th goal of the season on a power play at 1:21. After Jacina's goal with 1:03 left in regulation tied the game for Augusta at 5-5, a scoreless five-minute, sudden death overtime session sent the game to the shootout where the Lynx out-scored the Checkers 2-0 for the win.
Charlotte picked up a point for the shootout loss and now sports a record of 18-13-5 for 41 points, while the Lynx improved to 15-16-3 for 33 points. The two teams will play again Sunday afternoon in Augusta with faceoff set for 4:00 p.m.
