Rivermen Power Past Las Vegas 6-2 on the Road

Las Vegas (January 10, 2004) – The Peoria Rivermen dealt themselves a pair of wins over the Las Vegas Wranglers, winning 6-2 on Saturday night before a crowd of 5,701 at the Orleans Arena. The Rivermen won 4-2 last night against Las Vegas.

The win was Peoria's fourth in a row on the road, equaling a season high. The Rivermen are 11-1-4 over their last 16 road games; they are 12-3-4 on the road for the year. The victory also gave Peoria its first five-game winning streak of the season.

The loss was just Las Vegas' third in 19 opportunities (15-3-1) at the Orleans Arena.

The Rivermen made it 5-2 at 10:25 of the third period. Tyler Rennette collected a pass below the end redline to the left of the goal, circled out front and roofed the puck over Las Vegas goaltender Marc Magliarditi for his 15th tally of the season.

Randy Rowe set up the goal, extending his team, season-high point streak to 10 games with 18 points (10g, 8a).

Peoria completed the scoring at 14:58 of the third. Brendan Brooks stole the puck outside of the Las Vegas zone and darted in on a breakaway, roofing the puck over Magliarditi for his 10th tally of the year.

Peoria (20-8-7, 47 points) remains in third place in the Northern Division, two points behind the defending Kelly Cup Champion Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies. Las Vegas (21-11-5, 47 points) dropped to second place in the Pacific Division, one point behind the Idaho Steelheads, who won in Bakersfield 3-2 on this night.

Szuper has won his last seven starts of the season (7-3-1), stopping 32 of 34 in the victory. Magliarditi turned away 40 of 46 chances in his second straight loss (16-7-3).

The Rivermen opened the scoring at 2:53 of the first period. Adam Edinger won a face-off in the left circle back to Rivermen Captain Trevor Baker, who was playing defense in place of injured rookie defenseman Craig Olynick. Baker backpedaled to the center point and whistled a slap shot through a maze of players and cleanly past Magliarditi.

The marker was Baker's 11th of the season and extended his point streak to eight games with 12 points (6g, 6a).

The Wranglers tied it 1-1 at 8:33 of the first. Baker was unable to hold the puck in at the left point, springing Jeff Attard on a breakaway. Attard was stopped on an initial shot by Szuper, but Ryan Christie came darting in off the left wing to snap the puck by a diving Szuper. It was Christie's 10th goal of the season.

Las Vegas took its second lead of the two-game set with the Rivermen with just 26 seconds left in the first. Defenseman Jason McBain took a shot from the left point that Szuper stopped. The rebound was left for an unmarked Chris Kenady, who powered in his team-leading 14th tally of the season.

The Rivermen tied it 2-2 on a 5-on-3 power play at 5:00 of the second. Defenseman Joe Vandermeer snapped a pass to Brooks, who was just off the left post. Brooks one-touched a pass across the goal mouth to Marty Johnston, who snapped the puck into the open goal behind an out-of-position Magliarditi. It was Johnston's fourth goal with the Rivermen and eighth of the season.

The Rivermen were 1-for-6 on the power play.

Peoria took its second lead of the night on Baker's second of the game at 9:18 of the second. The tally was a mirror image of Baker's first goal. Baker fired a shot from the center point that deflected off the skate of a Las Vegas defender and past Magliarditi. It was Baker's 12th of the season.

The Rivermen pushed their lead to 4-2 at 19:06. Edinger twice held the puck in at the left point, directing it to Scott Turner at the left face-off circle on the second effort. Turner droved the puck to the net, cutting in on Magliarditi and shoveling the puck underneath the goaltender as he was falling down.

On Tuesday, January 13, the Rivermen travel to Cincinnati, Oh. to face off against the Cyclones. Game time is 6:30 p.m. CT at U.S. Bank Arena.
