IceGators Shoot Down Ice Pilots, 2-0

Lafayette, LA --The IceGators earned their fourth shutout of the season and their second against Pensacola with a 2-0 win at the Cajundome. Frederic Cloutier was perfect in net for the Gators, stopping 19 Ice Pilots' shots. The Gators first shutout against the Pilots this season was also at the Frozen Swamp, on November 29, 2003.
Despite an offensive volley of shots on the Ice Pilots Brian Eckland, the Gators were unable to find the net in the first 20 minutes of play. Gators captain Bobby Brown came the closest to scoring when he clanged a wrister off the post. The Gators kept the Pilots to just four shots on goal in the first period.
The IceGators maintained steady pressure on Eklund in the second frame and their hard work paid off with two goals. They were able to keep up the barrage of shots as they peppered Eklund with 30 shots on goal through two periods.
The Pilots' Tyler Kindle took a holding penalty and the Gators went on the power play. Ben Storey was patrolling the blue line as the Gators created a flurry of activity in front of Eklund. Kevin Mitchell cleared the puck up to Storey, who blasted it toward the net. Ed McGrane and Alex Materukin screened Eklund as the puck found the back of the net.
The second Gators' goal of the night was put up by Armands Berzins, when he took a pass from Semir Ben-Amor and skated to the edge of the crease. Jim Vickers kept Eklund busy as Berzins slid the puck in for his sixth tally of the year. The second assist went to Maxime Fortunus.
Frederic Cloutier showed All-Star form in turning away all of Pensacola's shots on goal. He was assisted by a strong defensive showing from his teammates, who limited the Pilots to 17 shots through three frames.
The IceGators take to the road this weekend as they travel to Texas to take on the Wildcatters in a two-game set. The next game on the Frozen Swamp will be Sunday, January 18th, at 4:05, against the Pensacola Ice Pilots.
