
Checkers Begin Community Outreach With Checkmates Appearance

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers season begins in mid-October but the team has already started their campaign to give back to the Charlotte community.
The Charlotte Checkers Cheerleaders, the CheckMates will be the opening performance during the 2008 Walk Now for Autism on Oct. 4 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The CheckMates will begin their performance at 9:15 a.m. This will be the Checkmates first time dancing at the Walk which has previously featured the Panthers' TopCats. This event will also mark the first of several community activities that the Checkmates will be involved in this season. Chubby will also be in attendance for a meet and greet with those attending the event.
Walk Now for Autism, the nation's largest grassroots autism walk program is Autism Speaks' signature fundraising and awareness event taking place in communities across the United States as well as Canada and the United Kingdom. Powered by volunteers and families with loved ones on the autism spectrum, this successful grassroots fundraising effort not only generates vital funds for autism research but also raises awareness about the increasing prevalence of autism and the need for increased research funding to combat this complex disorder.

Last season was another record breaking year off the ice as the club helped raise more than $440,000 for local charities and other community outreach programs. The organization prides itself on fundraising and creating awareness for local charities in order to lend a hand around the Charlotte community. Some of the events during Oct. are as follows:
Oct. 4 - Chubby to appear at the Susan G. Koman's Annual Walk from 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. to meet and greet participants in downtown Charlotte.
Oct. 4 - The CheckMates will perform during the opening ceremonies at the Walk Now for Autism at 9:15 a.m. Lowe's Motor Speedway. Team mascot, Chubby will also make an appearance at Walk Now for Autism at Lowe's Motor Speedway from 9:00 a.m.-10 a.m.
Oct. 4 - Chubby will make an appearance at the Down Syndrome Association of Charlotte Buddy Walk at Freedom Park from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Oct. 9 - Chubby will participate in Mascot Mania at Lowe's Motor Speedway - time TBA.
Oct. 24 - Chubby will attend CATS playground dedication to Sterling Elementary from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. for a meet and greet and photo opportunities with children.
The Checkers are getting ready for their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Opening night will take place on Halloween against the Augusta Lynx at a special 8 p.m. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
