Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - Florida Everblades president and general manager Craig Brush along with head coach Malcolm Cameron announced today the team has signed forwards Justin Bowers and Dan Travis to contracts for the 2008-09 season.
Both players join the Everblades out of the collegiate ranks. Bowers comes to Florida after spending the previous two seasons in Canada with the St. Thomas University Tommies. The Halifax, Nova Scotia native led the Tommies in goals (15), assists (24) and points (39) in 28 games last season. In 2006-07 the 23-year-old finished third on the team in scoring with 29 points and was named the club's Rookie of the Year and was also named to the All-Rookie Team by the Atlantic University Sport.
"Justin is coming off two strong years at St. Thomas." Cameron said. "He was the team's rookie of the year and followed that with an outstanding year last season with 39 points. Justin has good hands, is a good power play player and has good size. Although he'll be coming in as a rookie, he's gaining valuable experience right now by attending training camp with the AHL's Quad City Flames."
Prior to jumping to the collegiate level, Bowers played three seasons in the Maritime Junior-A league with Woodstock where he totaled 271 points in 148 games, including an impressive final season when he led the team in scoring with 123 points (58g, 65a) in 54 games.
Travis joins the Everblades after four years in the college ranks. The last two seasons saw the Wilton, New Hampshire native skate with the Quinnipiac Bobcats. The 24-year-old finished off last season by scoring 21 points (12g, 9a) in 37 games. In 2006-07 the 6-foot-3, 213-pound forward saw his season limited to just 18 games because of injury, but managed 14 points (4g, 10a).
"Dan is someone we're real excited about seeing in Florida." Cameron added. "He's a big, strong power forward who drives the net hard. He plays hard, and, like Bowers, he is gaining experience right now by skating in the AHL's Worcester Sharks training camp."
Travis, who was a 5th round draft pick by the Florida Panthers in the 2003 NHL entry draft, began his collegiate hockey career at the University of New Hampshire. In his freshman and sophomore seasons Travis combined to score seven points in 23 games.
