Aces Finalize 2008 Training Camp
September 30, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -The Alaska Aces expect as many as 29 players to attend their 2008 training camp, which begins on-ice at Ben Boeke Arena Saturday, October 4 at 1:00 p.m.
Nine of those 29 prospective attendees are currently at AHL training camps, including ECHL-contracted left winger Josh Soares (Houston) and defenseman Derick Martin (Providence). Goaltender Jean-Philippe Lamoureux, forwards Bo Cheesman, Alexandre Imbeault and Brett Hemingway, and defensemen Bryan Miller and Nick Tuzzolino currently are competing for spots with Alaska's AHL affiliate in Peoria but have signed ECHL contracts with the Aces. Alaska could see two players currently under contract with the Rivermen, winger Robin Richards and goalie Chris Holt, as well as another winger, Anchorage-born Erik Felde, who attended NHL training camp with the Columbus Blue Jackets before reporting to Peoria.
Another Anchorage-area stalwart, winger Mike Curry (from nearby Eagle River), will be among the prospects taking the ice on Saturday. Originally a seventh-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 2004, Curry spent four years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, accumulating 35 points (11g-24a) in 115 games. He will be joined up front by fellow rookie Matt Thomey, who scored seven goals and assisted on eight others in his final season at Yale in 2007-08. Defensemen Travis Martell (6-5, 210) and Brad Ouskun, a Winnipeg native who led his major junior team to the QMJHL Finals last season, look to earn a spot with the Aces in their first pro campaign.
The Aces will have just four full practice sessions before taking the ice next Wednesday and Thursday in a pair of pre-season contests against South Carolina, with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society in Alaska and Breast Cancer Focus, Inc. Both games will start at 7:15 p.m. Alaska has won eight of its last nine pre-season games, all at home, dating to 2003.
Alaska opens the regular season at home against arch rival Las Vegas October 17 and 18 at 7:15 p.m. All games are broadcast live on the flagship home of Aces hockey, KFQD 750 AM.
