Chattanooga Wins in Front of Sellout Crowd
July 5, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
The Chattanooga Lookouts have celebrated Independence Day in style, topping the Birmingham Barons 6-2 in front of a sellout crowd at AT&T Field on Wednesday night. 6,374 people saw Alex Perez go a perfect 5-for-5 with a double, raising his batting average 23 points to .283.
The Lookouts got their offense going early as a four-run first inning was too much of a deficit for Birmingham to come back from. In the first inning the team loaded the bases on a leadoff double, a single and a walk. With Zander Wiel batting, Barons pitcher Jimmy Lambert threw a wild pitch to bring home the first run of the game. Two straight sacrifice flys made it 3-0 Chattanooga. Rightfielder Jaylin Davis belted his second homer of the season to give them the four run lead.
Chattanooga increased their lead to six in the third on another wild pitch and a solo homer by Ryan Walker. Birmingham got their first and only runs of the day in the fifth on a two-run dinger by Matt Rose.
Starting pitcher Sean Poppen finished the season going six innings, allowing two runs with one walk and five strikeouts. Tonight's start was his third quality start of the year. Relievers Tyler Jay and Paco Rodriguez combined for three shutout innings to secure the win.
Brent Rooker continued his red hot stretch with two hits. The leftfielder has now reached base in 37 straight home games, which is the longest in Minor League Baseball since 2009.
Tomorrow is Thirsty Thursday at the park at 7:15 p.m. Fans can take advantage of $1 drink specials throughout the night. Gates for the game open at 5:15 p.m.
