NEW ORLEANS, LA (May 12) - The Storm Chasers dropped the opening game of their 8-day road trip, as Trevor Richards and the Baby Cakes bullpen combined to shut out Omaha 5-0 on Saturday night at The Shrine On Airline.
New Orleans struck first in the bottom of the 2nd inning. JT Riddle singled, stole 2nd, and scored on a single by Rafael Ortega.
The Baby Cakes stretched the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the 4th. Riddle singled again, Austin Dean walked, and Chad Wallach homered against Scott Barlow (L, 1-1).
Barlow pitched 3.2 innings, allowing 4 runs, 4 hits, and 3 walks. He struck out 4.
Trevor Richards (W, 2-0), meanwhile, was excellent for New Orleans. He tossed 6 scoreless frames, with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks. He held Omaha to only 3 hits.
Wily Peralta worked 3.1 innings of scoreless relief for Omaha, but New Orleans added another run in the bottom of the 8th against Kevin Lenik . Riddle again started the rally with a walk, went to 3rd on a single by Austin Dean, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Wallach.
Omaha couldn't muster any runs against the New Orleans bullpen; Billy Burns was thrown out at home plate in the top of the 8th inning, as he tried to score from 2nd on a single by Hunter Dozier . That was the closest the Chasers came to scoring; they were blanked over the final 3 frames by Jacob Turner (S, 1), who earned a 3-inning save.
The Storm Chasers (12-24) will continue the series in New Orleans tomorrow. RHP Glenn Sparkman (NR) will pitch for Omaha, opposed by LHP Dillon Peters (0-0, 4.50) for the Baby Cakes. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 Central Time.
