The Las Vegas 51s (14-22) beat the Fresno Grizzlies (21-15) 8-5 Thursday night in Fresno's final regular season game at Cashman Field. With the win, Las Vegas split the series, taking the final two games. Starter Scott Copeland (1-0) earned the win after six innings. He allowed seven hits, four runs (earned), walking four and striking out two. Grizzlies' starter David Paulino did not factor in the decision, despite going five frames. Reliever Andrew Thome (3-1) suffered the loss after giving up four runs in his one inning of work.
Zach Borenstein gave the 51s a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first when he singled to center.
Fresno took control in the top of the third, scoring four runs. Tony Kemp (2-for-5) led off with a single, expanding his hit streak to a team-high 17 games. He would steal second and waltz home on a bases-loaded walk. Then, AJ Reed smacked a single to right, knocking in a pair. Finally, a double-play netted the fourth run.
Las Vegas knotted the game at four in the bottom of the fourth with three RBI doubles. Two innings later, the 51s jumped to an 8-4 advantage. Tomas Nido laced a double to right, making it 5-4. A batter later, Nido and former Grizzly Johnny Monell would cross home on a three-run jack by Cody Asche (2-for-4). It was his second homer of the season.
Alejandro Garcia (1-for-2) plated the fifth Grizzlies' run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth.
With an 8-5 advantage, Tim Peterson closed the door with his second save in one and two-thirds of scoreless ball.
J.D. Davis picked up two hits, including his 15th double in the loss. Fresno fell to 1-3 in three-run affairs and 0-1 on the road.
