Pensacola Pelicans News Release
Pensacola dropped game two of a three game set in El Paso today. The Pelicans put up eight runs, but it wasn't enough as the Diablos won 11-8 on Wednesday.
A rare morning start saw LHP Dan Smith go against RHP Josh Neitz of El Paso at 10:35 a.m. The early call time pushed both starters out of the game around noon, as Neitz went 5.2 innings, and Smith went 5.1.
The Diablos started scoring early, putting 4 runs on the board in the bottom of the first. Pensacola cut into the lead in the top of the second when Chase Burch hit his first professional home run; a line drive to left that made the score 4-1 El Paso.
Neither team scored in the third, but the Pelicans opened the fourth with two runs to cut El Paso's lead to one. El Paso answered back with one run of insurance in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough: The Pelicans scored four in the top of the sixth to go ahead 7-5. El Paso was up to the challenge, however, getting three of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Both teams added a run in the seventh, but El Paso ran away with the game in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two more.
Highlights for the Pelicans included Burch's roundtripper, and Luis Bautista going 4-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Francisco Leandro hit a double as he ended the day 2-4, knocking in two and scoring once himself. Adam Deleo also drove in a run, going 3-5 and touching home.
Josh Kline nabbed the win, and Thompson picked up the save for El Paso, his second of the year. Dane De Valk took the loss, but struck out four batters in two innings pitched.
The Pelicans close out the series against El Paso tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Mountain Time before traveling to Grand Prairie, Texas for a three game series against the Air Hogs. The Pelicans will throw RHP Kyle Middleton tomorrow; his foil is LHP Nick Martin. All Pelicans games can be heard free online at http://www.pensacolapelicans.com/ by clicking the "Listen Live" link.
