Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Riding a season-long six-game winning streak entering the series finale, the Pawtucket Red Sox (46-59) fell to the Charlotte Knights, 13-10, on Sunday night at BB&T Ballpark despite recording 17 hits.
The scoring began early for the PawSox as they jumped on starter Justin Nicolino for 2 runs in the top of the first. Jantzen Witte worked a bases-loaded walk, and Tzu-Wei Lin supplied a sacrifice fly.
More offense was in store for Pawtucket in the following inning. Cole Sturgeon doubled and Juan Centeno singled before Gorkys Hernandez drove in the first run of the inning. Marco Hernandez added another with a sacrifice fly. The third run was scored on a Chad De La Guerra single to make the lead 5-0.
The Knights got two back in the bottom half of the inning with solo shots from Seby Zavala and Danny Mendick.
Gorkys Hernandez hit a first-pitch solo shot in the top of the fourth for his 15th long ball of the season.
An inning later, Bryce Brentz blasted a two-run shot for his 17th of the season before Cole Sturgeon connected on a solo homer - the seventh time this season the PawSox have gone back-to-back.
Charlotte stormed back in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring five runs on three homers. The Knights then tied the game in the sixth with four straight singles.
In the seventh, Cole Sturgeon singled, stole second and scored when Gorkys Hernandez reeled him in.
The back-and-forth contest continued in the eighth for Charlotte, and Yermin Mercedes cranked a three-run homer to make it 13-10.
