Dobnak's Stellar Start Paces Wings Win

Randy Dobnak held Indianapolis hitless through the first five innings, and the Red Wings offense clubbed three more home runs in a 6-5 win over the Indians Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. After a pair of games in Buffalo, the Wings will host Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Yankees) Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m., with actor Leslie David Baker - "Stanley" from the TV series "The Office" - signing autographs and posing for photos with fans.

Randy Dobnak set the tone early in the top of the first inning for the Wings, recording a 1-2-3 inning on only six pitches.

In the bottom of the first, Ronald Torreyes took a Brandon Waddell 3-2 fastball over the left field wall for his 10th homer of the season, giving Rochester an early 1-0 lead.

Rochester's homer happy offense continued in the bottom of the second as Wilin Rosario launched his 14th homer of the season on a 422-foot shot to left center, extending the Wings lead 2-0. The home run is Rochester's 34th since the All Star Break, which leads the International League.

Dobnak surrendered his first base runner of the game in the top of the fourth, as Cole Tucker worked an eight-pitch walk to begin the inning to end his nine consecutive outs streak to begin the game. Dobnak did not let the walk phase him, recording a groundout and two strikeouts to keep Tucker from scoring.

The Wings extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Zander Wiel led the inning off with a triple that deflected off the glove of by Indianapolis third basemen Ke'Bryan Hayes. Tomas Telis followed the triple with an RBI groundout to second, making the score 3-0.

Dobnak continued to hold the Indians hitless until the top of the sixth. With one out, Steven Baron hit a ball to the right side of the infield. Drew Maggi dove to give himself a chance to record the out, but the ball snuck past his glove into shallow right field for a single. Dobnak closed the door with consecutive groundouts to end the inning.

Rochester's hammering offense continued to knock around Waddell in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs and Maggi on first, Jake Cave recorded his sixth homer of the year on a two-run shot that landed in the Indianapolis bullpen, 5-0. The homer was Rochester's third of the game.

Dobnak ran into trouble in the top of the seventh A hit-by-pitch and single gave Indianapolis runners on first and second with no outs. Pablo Reyes knocked in Kevin Kramer from second base, making the score 5-1. After recording a soft groundout to Telis in front of the plate, Jake Reed came in to relieve Dobnak. Indianapolis scored one more run on an RBI groundout by Trayvon Robinson, cutting the Wings lead to 5-2. After giving up a walk to J.B Shuck, Reed caught Shuck sleeping on a pick-off at first base to end the inning.

Dobnak finished with 6.1 innings pitched, giving up three hits and two earned runs. He walked one and struck out four on 92 pitches, 58 for strikes. It was his fourth straight start of at least 6.0 innings pitched.

Indianapolis made a pitching change of their own before the bottom of the seventh, bringing in Jake Brentz. Waddell gave up four hits and five earned runs over 6.0 innings, walking two and striking out six. He threw 92 pitches, 58 for strikes.

In the top of the eighth, the Indians cut Rochester lead to one on a two-run home run by Ke'Bryan Hayes, 5-4.

The Wings gained one run back in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice flyout by Torreyes to plate Maggi, who led the inning off with a triple, extending Rochester's lead to 6-4.

Rochester made their second pitching change in the top of the ninth, bringing in Preston Guilmet. Reed finished with 1.2 innings pitched, giving up two hits and two earned runs, walking and striking out one. Pablo Reyes homerd off Guilmet to open the ninth inning, bringing the Indians back to within a run at 6-5. Guilmet allowed a pair of walks that put two runners on with two out, then went to a 3-2 count on Tucker. Guilmet struck pout Tucker swinging to close out the win.

NOTES: Drew Maggi pushed his on-base streak to 31 games with his walk in the sixth inning...Alejandro De Aza 's ten game on-base streak came to an end with his 0-3 day... Wilin Rosario extended his hit streak to seven games with his two run home run in the second inning.

THIS DAY IN RED WINGS HISTORY

1999 - Second baseman Jerry Hairston hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over Ottawa at Frontier Field. The win put Rochester one half game above the Lynx in the IL North.

2005 - The Rochester Red Wings and Scott Baker took down the Charlotte Knights 1-0 on Camp Day at Frontier Field. Baker's pitching and Kevin West's big solo home run led the Wings to victory on Thursday afternoon. West hit a monster solo home run to left to break the scoreless tie in the seventh, putting the Wings up 1-0. Baker, pitching in his first Red Wings start after his one-day call up to the big leagues, pitched a gem of a game.
