Charlotte FC Welcomes New Academy Coaches and Operations Staff for 2021-22 Season

CHARLOTTE - After a highly successful inaugural season, Charlotte FC's Academy program will be expanding its scope for the 2021-22 campaign.

A brand-new full-time U14 side will complement the U15 and U17 teams that competed in the inaugural season. The part-time Discovery Program, for U12 and U13 age groups, will also re-commence in September 2021.

In accordance with the Academy program's growth, and following a rigorous hiring process and internal restructure, Charlotte FC is delighted to announce the following new staff members:

Bryan Scales - U14 Head Coach

Bryan Scales will take charge of the new U14 team after over a decade at New England Revolution as Academy Director and Academy Coach. Scales is a US Soccer A-licensed Coach, who also holds the prestigious French Federation Elite Coach License.

"Bryan's expertise and experience in developing players within MLS fits our mandate of hiring the most-qualified and experienced staff in the country," says Academy Manager Dan Lock.

Under his leadership with the Revs, seven Homegrown Players were signed to professional contracts, over 40 players were invited to US Soccer Youth National Team camps, and more than 80 players received NCAA Division I scholarships.

"After meeting with Marc and Dan and getting to know the people, the place and the project, it was clear this is a great opportunity to be involved in something special," says Scales. "I look forward to working with a terrific staff and helping our U14s on their path towards the Charlotte FC first team."

Jorge Herrera - U15 Head Coach

Following a playing career with several top-division South American clubs, Jorge Herrera arrived in Charlotte in 2007 to play professionally for the Charlotte Eagles and Charlotte Independence. Herrera worked with the Charlotte FC Academy in the inaugural season as Academy Assistant Coach, supporting coaching staff across all age groups. In 2021-22, Herrera will coach the U15 team.

"We're absolutely delighted to announce Jorge as our U15 Head Coach," says Lock. "His expertise was invaluable during our first season and we're excited for him to step into the Head Coach position."

During a 20-year playing career, Herrera played over 140 games and scored 55 goals. He became a firm fan favorite during five seasons with the Independence, up until his retirement in 2020.

"I am truly delighted to take on this new challenge and I thank the organization for giving me the opportunity to lead our U15 group," says Herrera. "I look forward to helping these young athletes pursue their dreams, and to advancing the club's goals for producing Homegrown talent."

Abdul Chibsah - Academy Head of Recruitment

Abdul Chibsah joins Charlotte FC as its new Academy Head of Recruitment, bringing exceptional experience in talent identification, data analysis and team administration-from grassroots to professional level.

"We are privileged to have Chibsah oversee all recruitment and scouting for the Academy," says Lock. "The USSF-licensed coach joins us after similar roles with the University of Delaware and Philadelphia Union."

Chibsah replaces Alex Martinez, who will be moving into a full-time Academy Coaching role. The former Charlotte Independence midfielder will now work with all Academy teams as Academy Coach, as well as leading the U12 Discovery Program squad.

"I'd like to thank Marc Nicholls and the leadership group for the opportunity to serve at Charlotte FC," says Chibsah. "I look forward to contributing to the development of the game, in and beyond the Carolinas, and assisting our young talents reach their sporting and academic dreams."

Bruno Paschoalini - Head of Academy Operations

Paschoalini, a native of Brazil, joins CLTFC from FC Dallas, where he spent six years in academy and facility operations.

"Bruno's experience in coordinating venues, travel, equipment supplies and budgets makes him a natural choice for our expanding Academy program," says Lock. "He will be the man who keeps the Academy running like clockwork."

Paschoalini, who boasts a Masters in Sports Management and an MBA in Marketing, has also worked with the likes of the Dallas Mavericks and the Dallas Stars.

"I am thrilled to join the Charlotte FC Academy and to help in its quest to develop the best talent from across the Carolinas," says Paschoalini.

The Academy's pre-season begins on Monday, Aug. 2. The U14, U15 and U17 teams will then commence MLS Next league play on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Academy will begin 2021-22 with 54 full-time players, including 30 new signings.

"We are incredibly excited to begin pre-season, and to welcome our new additions," says Lock. "We can't wait to get to work with our new recruits and offer sincere thanks to their respective hometown clubs, who have been vital in the development process."
