SAL1 Asheville Tourists

Charity Auction to benefit Ed Quijada

April 23, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

The Asheville Tourists will host a charity auction during games on Saturday, April 25, and Sunday, April 26, at McCormick Field when the team plays the Greenville Drive. Fans will have the opportunity to bid on a wide variety of sports memorabilia, with all of the proceeds benefiting the family of former Asheville pitcher Ed Quijada.

Quijada pitched for Asheville during the 1991 season and posted a 6-8 record with a 3.77 ERA in 22 games, including 13 starts. Drafted by the Houston Astros in the 16th round in 1988, Quijada was recently involved in a serious automobile accident that has left him paralyzed. The proceeds from the Tourists' auction will go directly to the Quijada family to help offset the numerous medical bills.

"Unfortunately tragedy can strike any of us at any time," said Asheville assistant general manager Chris Smith. "We have been able to acquire some nice autographed sports memorabilia that we will auction to help Ed and his family. With warm weather predicted, we are hoping for large crowds that could result in a nice donation to the Quijadas."

The Tourists will play the Drive on Saturday and Sunday before receiving their first off-day of the season on Monday. The team will be back in action on Tuesday at McCormick Field to open a four-game series with the Charleston RiverDogs. For more information, contact the Tourists' front office at (828) 258-0428.
