Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Bowling Green, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods held the West Virginia Power scoreless through the first seven innings of Thursday night's game at Bowling Green Ballpark and used an 11-hit attack to take the third game of the series with a 5-1 victory.
West Virginia spoiled an opportunity in the first inning as they left two men on base. The Hot Rods picked up where they left off a night ago and continued to deliver in the clutch. Mike Sheridan's first of three hits was a two-out single in the first inning to plate the first two runs of the game.
In the fourth, the Hot Rods had the bases loaded with nobody out, and Power starting pitcher Maurice Bankston was able to minimize the damage, allowing just two runs to score. Jason Tweedy reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Henry Wrigley to score the first run and Sheridan scored the final run of the inning on Jason Corder's groundout. The Hot Rods plated their final run on Jake Jeffries's two-out single in the seventh. Quincy Latimore began the eighth inning with a triple and scored on Andrew Walker's base hit, ending West Virginia's scoreless innings streak at 13.
Frank De Los Santos (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings of five hit ball and struck out three to get the victory. Maurice Bankston (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits over five innings with a pair of strikeouts.
West Virginia fell to 4-11 with the loss and the Hot Rods improved to 7-8 after the win. Bobby Spain delivered another multi-hit game for the Power. Spain has recorded multiple hits in each of his last four starts, and is 8-for-21 on the current road trip. Greg Picart delivered the other multi-hit game for the Power, going 2-for-4 in the nine hole.
The Power will finish the four game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark on Friday night. Right hander Chris Andujar (2-1, 2.25) will start for Bowling Green and the Power will counter with left hander Tyler Cox (0-1, 15.75). The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
