Hagerstown Suns News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ: The Hagerstown Suns (5-7) struck out a season-high 18 times as they lost to the Lakewood BlueClaws (8-6) 6-2 on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ.
Lakewood starter Jesus Sanchez (1-1) led the way for the BlueClaws, fanning nine Suns in his five innings of work before giving way to relievers Walter Tejeda (four strikeouts), Jacob Diekman (two strikeouts) and Santo Hernandez (three strikeouts).
Suns starting pitcher Jack McGeary (0-1) threw very well for four innings, but allowed three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth inning. The loss was the first time a Suns starting pitcher has factored into the decision in a game this season.
Robby Jacobsen, the Suns left fielder, almost put Hagerstown ahead in the second inning with a two-out blast off the top of the right-center field wall, but the ball caromed back into play and Jacobsen ended up with a triple. Jacobsen was stranded at third base, the first of 11 Hagerstown runners left on the base paths in the game.
Chris Lugo, David Slovak and Kevin Light combined to pitch three innings of relief for the Suns and allowed only one run. Lugo and Slovak each pitched a scoreless frame for Hagerstown.
Chris Curran was the only Hagerstown batter with more than one hit in the game, as the Suns center fielder had a single and a double in the contest. Curran, along with DH Jose Lozada, were also the only to Suns to not strike out at the plate in the game.
The Suns and BlueClaws will play the second game of the three game series on Friday, April 24th at 7:05 PM.
The Suns return to action at Municipal Stadium with the first Feed-Your-Face-Monday of the season on April 27th. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM and gates will open at Municipal Stadium at 5:35.
The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Ticket packages and sponsorships are available by calling the Suns at 301-791-6266. Visit the Suns on the web at www.hagerstownsuns.com.
