Augusta Survives Charleston's Late Surge, 8-7

CHARLESTON, SC - Dan Brewer's four hit performance shadowed four RiverDogs errors as the Augusta GreenJackets survived a ninth inning rally to defeat Charleston 8-7 in South Atlantic League action Thursday evening in front of 4,340 fans at Augusta's Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The RiverDogs were down by two in the ninth when Brewer lined a double down the left field line only to dash home after Brian Baisley added a double to left. With the tying run in scoring position, GreenJackets reliever Daniel Runzler struck out Ray Kruml and Melky Mesa to end Charleston's rally and secure the 8-7 Augusta triumph.

With the defeat, the RiverDogs fall to 8-6 while the GreenJackets improve to 3-11 with their first win in Augusta this season.

The GreenJackets took an initial 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Johnny Monel slammed the first pitch of the inning over the right field wall for a solo blast. Craig Ziegler and James Simmons walked for Ehire Adrianza, who single to left field that plated Ziegler as Simmons scampered into second. Dom Duggan was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Ryan Lormand, who reached on a fielding error by RiverDogs starter David Phelps that enabled Simmons to score the inning's third run.

Augusta tacked an additional run in the third inning to take a 4-0 advantage when Monell and Ziegler each singled to start the inning. After a wild pitch advanced the runners into scoring position, Charlie Culberson lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Monell.

Charleston unleashed an offensive barrage in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead when Chase Wheems smacked a one-out single only to sprint to third after Carmen Angelini laced a double down the left field line. With runners in scoring position, Brewer lined a single to left that knocked in both Weems and Angelini. Following a wild pitch that advanced Brewer to third and a Brian Baisley walk, Abraham Almonte smashed a grounder to third base that was muffed by Augusta's Culberson for an error as Brewer scored on the play. Melky Mesa walked to load the bases for Taylor Grote, who cracked a single to left that drove in Baisley and Almonte only to have Mesa thrown out at the plate in an attempt to score from first to end the inning.

The GreenJackets responded in the home half of the fifth frame to reclaim a 6-5 advantage. Mazzola and Monell jumpstarted the inning with singles only to have Monell scoot to second and have Mazzola eliminated at third after Ziegler ground into a double play. A wild pitch allowed Monell to slide into third only to score when Culberson hammered a triple to the left-center field gap. Angelini's fielding error off of Simmons' ground ball allowed Culberson to score Augusta's go-ahead run.

The RiverDogs knotted the game 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning when Brewer destroyed a leadoff solo shot over the left field fence for his first home run of the season.

Augusta added two runs in the home half of the eighth frame to take an 8-6 advantage over the RiverDogs. Adrianza walked to lead off the inning for Duggan who singled to left as Adrianza advanced to second. Lormand dropped a sacrifice bunt attempt to third base, but Mike Lyon's throwing error allowed Adrianza to score and in addition to Duggan reach third. Mike Loberg lifted a sacrifice fly that would turn into the eventual winning run when Duggan stepped on home plate.

The RiverDogs will look to win the rubber game of the series against the Augusta GreenJackets Friday night. Charleston turns to right-hander Brett Marshall (0-1, 4.22 ERA) while Augusta is scheduled to send southpaw Kelvin Marte (0-1, 9.95 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Augusta's Lake Olmstead Stadium.

After the longest road trip of the season, a nine-game three-city trip through Georgia, the RiverDogs return to the friendly confines of Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Saturday, April 25 for a three-game set versus the Savannah Sand Gnats, an affiliate of the New York Mets.
