Greenville Drive News Release
Kannapolis, NC - The Drive (9-6) were able to hold off an Intimidator's (10-5) last gasp rally Thursday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, and secured a 2-1 victory.
As Kannapolis had the tying run in scoring position with just one out, reliever Felix Ventura was able to induce Jordan Cheatum into a game-ending double play. The right-hander got the final five outs of the game for the Drive to earn his second save of the season.
A pair of Drive doubles in the top of the fifth broke a 0-0 tie. Mitch Dening led off the frame with a two-bagger, and scored three batters later as David Mailman recorded an RBI-double of his own.
After starting pitcher Yeiper Castillo held the Intimidators scoreless through the first 4.0 innings, Drew Garcia put the Kannapolis' first run on the board in the fifth off Fabian Williamson (1-1). All it took was an RBI-groundout to get the job done, but it was the only run of the night for Chicago White Sox affiliate as the Greenville trio of pitchers held the opposition hitless in eight attempts with the bases loaded.
With both teams looking to take advantage of scoring situations, it was the Drive who were able to do so in the top of the eighth. Having just been activated from the disabled list prior to the game, Ryan Dent drew a leadoff walk. After stealing second, Anthony Rizzo delivered an RBI-single off Charlis Burdie (0-1).
The Drive and Intimidators conclude their four-game series Friday evening with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Brock Huntzinger will toe the rubber for Greenville, as Kannapolis sends right-hander Daniel Hudson to the hill.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Tuesday, April 28th for four games with the Savannah Sand Gnats, affiliate of the New York Mets. Single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations can be purchased by calling (864) 240-4500 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com for more information.
