Ottawa Champions News Release

OTTAWA - Phillippe Aumont struck out eight over six innings but the Ottawa Champions lost 6-5 to the New Jersey Jackals after blowing a 4-2 lead in the ninth inning.

Aumont's eight strikeouts got him to 799 strikeouts over his professional career. Andrew Cooper allowed two runs in the top of the ninth for the blown save.

"Phil's always a dominant guy but today his ball was really moving," said manager Sebastien Boucher. "He had a lot of pitches called balls and it was pretty much just because of movement. When your ball moves like that it's always hard to keep it in the zone but he did a really great job and he's that kind of guy."

Miles Sheehan came into the game in the tenth with an automatic runner on second and gave up a double to Conrad Gregor to make it 5-4 New Jersey. Sheehan was saddled with the loss, giving up two runs, one of which was unearned.

Malik Collymore scored to make it 6-5 after a Maikol Gonzalez bunt in the bottom of the tenth but were unable to complete the comeback.

Eduard Pinto scored the opening run after a wild pitch to Jiandido Tromp got past Jackals catcher Jason Agresti. Tromp scored later in the game and had two hits and an RBI. Collymore also had two hits and Jordan Caillouet had an RBI.

Brendan Butler got yanked after four innings for the Jackals, striking out one with four earned runs and a walk. Dylan Brammer and Reece Karalus, who earned the win, pitched a combined five scoreless innings in relief. Lenny Castillo struckout Vincent Guglietti with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth to end the game.

Ottawa will get a shot at redemption on Saturday after the Champions honour victims and volunteers from the recent flooding in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Mayor Jim Watson, Ontario Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities Merrilee Fullerton and MPP Jeremy Roberts will each say a few words before Roberts throws out the ceremonial first pitch.

The game's first pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
