CF Montréal Acquires Forward Kwadwo Opoku
July 5, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club de Foot Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - CF Montréal announced Wednesday the acquisition of forward Kwadwo "Mahala" Opoku from LAFC in return for $1,650,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money and $100,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money. The Club also acquired $100,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money from LAFC in return for a 2023 international roster spot.
"We are very pleased with this acquisition. He is a young player who already possesses good experience in the league, notably having won the MLS Cup last year as a decisive player with LAFC," said CF Montréal Vice-President and Chief Sporting Officer Olivier Renard. "He will offer us something different from our existing player pool, with his speed and one-on-one ability. It is a profile we've been lacking in our squad. I am convinced he will be able to continue his progression with us."
Opoku joins Montreal after winning the 2022 MLS Cup with LAFC. In three and a half seasons with the Californian club, the 21-year-old Ghanaian striker played 60 regular-season games, including 35 starts, and 3,254 minutes of play, while collecting nine goals and seven assists. In the MLS Cup playoffs, he played four games, scoring in LAFC's 3-0 victory over Austin FC in the Western Conference final last October.
Before making the leap to North America, he scored 29 goals in 64 games with the Attram De Visser Soccer Academy. Internationally, he has represented Ghana at U-17 and U-20 levels, notably taking part in the 2017 U-17 African Cup of Nations in Gabon, where he played in two of the group stage matches.
Transaction: CF Montréal acquires forward Kwadwo Opoku from LAFC in return for $1,650,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money and $100,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money. The Club also acquired $100,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money from LAFC in return for a 2023 international roster spot.
