Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Cristopher Cespedes launched his second grand slam of the week as the Delmarva Shorebirds downed the Fredericksburg Nationals 6-3 on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The Shorebirds (27-16) have now alternated wins and losses for eight straight games, including the past three contests against the Nationals (14-31).
The FredNats opened the scoring in their first half-inning at the plate. Viandel Pena singled to begin the game and advanced to second on a groundout. One out later, Jackson Coutts flipped a single to center, scoring Pena, and giving the FredNats the first run of the game.
Delmarva answered in force in the bottom half of the inning. Darell Hernaiz was gifted a double after the second baseman lost a high chopper in the sun and Hudson Haskin was then hit by a pitch. After TT Bowens walked, Cespedes walloped his second grand slam of the week, his fifth homer of the campaign, to push Delmarva ahead 4-1.
Clutch two-out hitting produced another run in the second for the FredNats. Allan Berrios and Jeremy De La Rosa both drew walks to begin the inning. Two outs later, Viandel Pena lined a single back through the box to score Berrios and trim the FredNats deficit to two runs.
In the bottom of the inning, Jean Carmona ripped a single with one away and one out later stole second. Hernaiz brought Carmona on home as he poked a single to left, restoring Delmarva's three run cushion.
After two scoreless innings, the FredNats tried to make some inroads in the fifth. Pena walked to start the inning and one out later J.T. Arruda slashed a double down the left field line, putting runners at second and third. After a walk to Coutts loaded the bases, Jeremy Ydens bounced into a run-scoring fielder's choice to make it a 5-3 game.
Fredericksburg gifted the Shorebirds an insurance run in the sixth. With one away, Ryne Ogren lofted a flyball to left that was lost in the lights and proceeded to drop in allowing Ogren to scamper into second with a double. A walk to Cespedes was followed by a strikeout leaving two runners on with two out. Lamar Spark hit a sky-high pop-up to first that was dropped, with the error allowing Ogren to score from second, bringing the game to its final line of 6-3.
Ignacio Feliz (2-0) collected the win for Delmarva after 4.1 dominant no-hit innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one walk while striking out three.
Mitchell Parker (3-5) was handed the loss for the FredNats after starting and going 5.2 innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks, striking out eight.
Brandon Young started for the Shorebirds and grinded through four frames, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks, striking out four.
Cespedes now owns two of the three grand slams hit this season for Delmarva. Hernaiz had the only multi-hit performance for Delmarva, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored plus an RBI.
Pena sparked the FredNats offense at the top of the order, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Shorebirds and FredNats go toe-to-toe again on Friday night at Perdue Stadium. Shane Davis (3-1, 4.66) toes the rubber for Delmarva against Karlo Seijas (1-5, 5.65) for the FredNats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
