Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Luis Mieses continued his hot-hitting ways and Jesus Valles turned in his best pitching performance of the season, but Los Rapidos de Kannapolis fell in the third of six matchups with Fayetteville 6-2 on Thursday night at Atrium Health Ballpark.

Valles got the nod on the mound for Kannapolis. The righty from Venezuela looked sharp on the mound, firing five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three Fayetteville batters. RHP Martin Carrasco (L, 1-2) relieved Valles in the sixth inning, unable to continue the success from his teammate. Carrasco struggled to keep runners off the base paths, letting three runs score on give hits in his 1.2 innings. The Tijuana, Mexico native also walked two and struck out three batters in his outing.

Los Rapidos opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with some flair when the hot-hitting Mieses tallied his second RBI in as many nights on a first-pitch solo shot to left field to give Kannapolis the early 1-0 lead.

Fayetteville capitalized on shaky bullpen pitching from Los Rapidos in the top of the sixth inning. After two singles, a wild pitch from Carrasco allowed Ronaldo Urdaneta to score from third to tie the ballgame at 1-1. Two batters later, Nate Perry grounded out to the pitcher, giving Kenedy Corona the chance to cross the plate, giving Los Guerreros a 2-1 advantage. Jordan Brewer added an insurance run two batters later with an RBI single that drove in Bryan Arias, making it 3-1 in favor of Fayetteville.

RHP Peyton Plumlee (W, 2-1) got the start for Los Guerreros de Fayetteville on the mound. The former Mississippi State arm, who entered the game with the lowest ERA of any pitcher who has made a start in 2021 for Fayetteville, continued his torrid start to 2021 by going five innings, allowing three hits, one run, and striking out six. RHP Shea Barry (S, 1) entered in relief of Plumlee, providing consistency from the bump for skipper Ray Hernandez by working three innings, allowing one hit, one unearned run, and no walks with two punchouts.

Harvin Mendoza insured that Los Guerreros would not get too far ahead in the ballgame, adding an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh, bringing D.J. Gladney across the plate to cut the Fayetteville lead to 3-2.

An error in the field cost Kannapolis more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Following two runners getting on base, Luke Berryhill hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing J.C. Correa to score from third base. On the same play, Caberea Weaver committed a throwing error in center field, with the ball ending up out of play, giving Brewer the chance to score on the play, growing the Guerreros lead to 5-2.

The Cannon Ballers return to action Friday night in their fourth of six games this week with the Woodpeckers. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Friday night tilt at Atrium Health Ballpark. LHP Bailey Horn (1-2, 2.25 ERA) will take the mound for the Ballers, while Fayetteville will send out RHP Jayson Schroeder (1-1, 8.53 ERA).

Tickets can be purchased for any of the remaining home games at kcballers.com or at the F&M Bank Box Office located at Atrium Health Ballpark.
