Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Eight strikeouts by Chase Solesky and some late game capitalization of Woodpeckers fielding errors allowed the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers to knot the series at one win a piece, claiming a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night over Fayetteville at Atrium Health Ballpark.

Solesky got the start for Kannapolis on the mound. The Tulane product cruised through his 4.1 innings of work, tying his single-game season high in strikeouts with eight while walking one and allowing two hits and two runs. LHP Ty Madrigal entered in relief in the fifth inning, going two shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one. RHP Homer Cruz (W, 2-0) provided efficiency out of the bullpen, tossing one inning, allowing one unearned run and striking out three en route to the winning decision.

The Ballers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a Luis Mieses sacrifice fly that allowed Jose Rodriguez to cross the plate, making it an early 1-0 ballgame in favor of Kannapolis.

Fayetteville answered emphatically in the top of the third when Jordan Brewer smacked an RBI triple to right-center field, allowing Yohander Martinez and Shay Whitcomb to score, giving the Woodpeckers a 2-1 advantage.

RHP Misael Tamarez began the game on the hill for Fayetteville. The righty from the Dominican Republic threw four innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking one and striking out six. RHP Alfredi Jimenez (L, 0-3) relieved Tamarez in the fifth inning, delivering xxxx

A series of errors in the field allowed the Ballers to retake the lead in the bottom of the seventh frame. After Harvin Mendoza and Caberea Weaver reached base, Samil Polanco smoked an RBI single to center field to bring home Mendoza to knot the ballgame. On the very next at-bat, Daniel Millwee bunted in an effort to sacrifice a run home, but a throwing error by Jimenez not only allowed Millwee to reach base, it also cost Fayetteville two runs as Weaver and Polanco hustled around the basepaths to give Kannapolis a 4-2 lead late in the tilt.

The Woodpeckers fought back in the top of the eighth inning with a strong comeback attempt. Martinez reached on a fielding error by Ballers second baseman Bryan Ramos that gave Yeuris Ramirez the opportunity to cross the plate, cutting the Kannapolis lead to 4-3.

RHP McKinley Moore (S, 4) quickly recovered and shut the door in the eighth and ninth innings, tallying his fourth save of the season with a strikeout along the way. The 6'6" righty has quickly become the unannounced closer for the Ballers bullpen, becoming a dependable arm late in the ballgame for skipper Guillermo Quiroz.

Kannapolis will look to move ahead in the series in the third of six matchups with the Woodpeckers this week on Thursday night. First pitch for the Thirsty Thursday tilt is set for 7:00 p.m. RHP Jesus Valles (1-1, 7.53 ERA) will begin the ballgame for the Ballers, while Fayetteville will send out RHP Peyton Plumlee (1-1, 1.23 ERA) to start on the bump.
