Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Tuesday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium, but the Cedar Rapids Kernels came alive in the final frames and posted a 4-3 comeback win. The Kernels (3-2, 42-33) secured a 1-0 lead within this four-game series against the Timber Rattlers (3-2, 34-40).

Logan Gillaspie (1-4) kept the Kernels hitless for more than six innings before eventually landing in the loss column. He gave up a leadoff walk and then retired the next 18 batters. Gillaspie faced the minimum through six frames with Yeltsin Encarnacion caught stealing in the first inning following his base on balls.

Wisconsin gave Gillaspie a 2-0 lead within the third. Brice Turang notched a one-out single and reached third base on wild pitches prior to David Fry's RBI double. Two batters later, Connor McVey bunted for an RBI single that drove in Fry.

Chris Williams broke up the no-hitter in the seventh inning and closed the difference to 2-1. Williams launched a massive solo home run to left field and regained the outright team lead in round-trippers with his ninth blast overall.

The rally continued during the eighth when Cedar Rapids surged in front, 4-2. The Kernels loaded the bases for Jacob Pearson, and he produced an RBI force out to bring in Jared Akins. Estamy Ureña batted next and hit a tiebreaking double that plated pinch-runner Daniel Ozoria and Pearson.

Former Kirkwood Community College Eagle Korry Howell answered in the ninth inning with a two-out solo shot, but the Timber Rattlers could not complete their comeback attempt and fell by a 4-3 margin.

Alex Schick (3-1) tallied four strikeouts over two innings and conceded just one run in a win. Gillaspie was charged with three runs in seven-plus innings, and Victor Castañeda allowed two inherited runners to score along with a run of his own in his first blown save of the season.

This four-game series between Cedar Rapids and Wisconsin continues at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday. Kernels right-hander Austin Schulfer (5-3, 2.79) will start against Timber Rattlers right-hander Justin Jarvis (1-0, 4.94). Morgan Hawk will call the game online at www.kmryradio.com, www.kernels.com, and MiLB.TV.
