GENEVA, ILL. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels came up one run short Monday within a 3-2 loss to the Kane County Cougars at Northwestern Medicine Field. Kane County (9-10, 44-44) prevented Cedar Rapids (13-6, 45-43) from scoring in a pair of late bases-loaded opportunities and secured a 3-1 series victory.

The Kernels controlled the first half of Monday's series finale. Jose Miranda's two-out RBI single in the first inning gave Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead, and a leaping catch at the right-field wall by Trey Cabbage during the second kept the Kernels ahead. Jared Akins added an RBI double within the fourth that pushed Cedar Rapids' advantage to 2-0.

The Cougars broke up the shutout and tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Ernie De La Trinidad hit a sacrifice fly that plated Gabriel Maciel and allowed Yoel Yanqui to reach third base. Yan Sanchez followed with an RBI single to bring in Yanqui.

Sanchez helped Kane County take a 3-2 lead during the eighth inning. He made a sliding stop from third base in the top half of the frame that stranded a runner in scoring position, and he produced a go-ahead single later in the inning.

Kane County escaped bases-loaded jams in the seventh and ninth innings on its way to the one-run victory. Jayson McKinley picked up a strikeout and induced a force out to end the top of the seventh. Royce Lewis' pinch hit during the ninth loaded the bases again for Cedar Rapids, but a strikeout and a force out allowed Erbert Gonzalez to close the contest.

Gonzalez (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings and earned the win. Melvi Acosta (1-4) gave up the deciding run within the ninth and took the loss. Randy Dobnak led all pitchers with four strikeouts over seven innings pitched for Cedar Rapids but did not factor in the decision.

Cedar Rapids will return to action Wednesday with the opener of a six-game homestand. The Kernels will host the Fort Wayne TinCaps at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday, and the probable pitchers are Cedar Rapids southpaw Tyler Watson (2-3, 4.85) and Fort Wayne right-hander Luis Patiño (2-3, 2.55).
