Dayton Dragons News Release

Midland, Mich.-Dayton left-hander Packy Naughton fired eight shutout innings, allowing just two base runners and striking out a career-high nine batters, as the Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 5-0 on Monday night. The win, the first nine-inning shutout victory of the season for the Dragons, gave them a split of the four-game series in Midland.

Naughton allowed just two hits, and single and triple, and picked one of the runners off first base, allowing him to face one batter over the minimum in eight innings. Naughton has not allowed a run over his last three starts and has a scoreless streak of 22 innings dating back to June 24.

The Dragons took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the fourth inning. Lorenzo Cedrola began the inning with a single to center field, and Jeter Downs followed with a double to the fence in left-center that scored Cedrola. Andy Suglilo then singled to right to bring in Downs.

The Dragons added two more runs in the sixth inning, taking advantage of two errors to build their lead to 4-0. In the seventh, Downs singled to left field with two outs to bring in Jose Garcia from second to make it 5-0.

Meanwhile, Naughton threw just 91 pitches before being replaced by Aneurys Zabala to start the ninth inning. Zabala worked a perfect inning as he combined with Naughton to retire 26 of the 28 Loons batters in the game.

The Dragons finished with eight hits. Garcia, Cedrola, and Downs each had two. Cedrola is 7 for 13 over his last three games and is hitting .333 in six games he has played with the Dragons since being acquired in a trade with Boston.
