Fort Worth Cats News Release

Pensacola, Fla -- Joel Kirsten threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout as the Cats walloped Pensacola 10-0 on Tuesday night at Pelican Park.

Kirsten threw seven innings of no-hit baseball before Pelicans' third baseman Cesar Aranguren led off with a ground ball past the mound. The second baseman Cameron Blair dove to make a stop, but a throw from his knees was wide of the bag, allowing Aranguren to reach on an infield single.

He wound up throwing his first complete game of the season, permitting one hit, striking out six and walking three. He retired 18 straight hitters at one point in the game and cruised through the middle innings with a huge lead.

The Cats erupted for six runs in the second inning against their former teammate Cory Walters. John Allen hit a leadoff homer, his fifth of the season to give the Cats a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Aaron Sisk brought home Ed Montague with an RBI single. With two outs in the inning, Fort Worth supplemented its lead on a two-run double by Jake Gautreau and a two-run single by Nelson Teilon.

The Cats added a run in the fourth inning as Teilon plated his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center. They scored two more in the fifth on a Brian Fryer RBI single and a wild pitch.

Kirsten (3-1) was making a bid for his second career no-hitter. He threw the only hitter in American Association history on Aug. 21, 2006 against El Paso at LaGrave Field.

Walters (0-3) suffered the loss after permitted seven runs on seven hits in four innings of work.

With the win, the Cats record improved to 13-11, now in a tie with Pensacola for the top spot in the American Association South Division.

Teilon returned to the Cats' lineup after missing four games to be with his wife after the birth of their child. Blair made his Cats' debut playing at second base and was 0-for-5 at the plate. Blair, the Dallas native, played last year in the Pirates organization. To make room on the roster, the Cats released second baseman Willie James who had played in 22 of the first 23 games for the Cats in 2008.
