GREENVILLE, SC - Pitchers Brandon Weeden and Scott Elbert turned in strong efforts Thursday night, leading Columbus to a doubleheader sweep of the struggling Greenville Bombers at Municipal Stadium. The Catfish, winners in game one 7-2 and 6-1 in the nightcap, limited Greenville to five hits in the twinbill. The Bombers (24-29) have lost three in a row and have been shut down on six hits during the stretch.

In the opener, Weeden (2-3) fired six innings, yielding two runs on three hits with nine strikeouts. Columbus scored three runs in the second inning off lefthander Andrew Dobies (5-3), who lasted five innings allowing four runs on eight hits. Solo home runs in the frame by Blake DeWitt and Ryan Russ put the Catfish up, 2-0. Columbus added another run on Jamie Hoffmann's two-out RBI single.

Greenville's offensive highlight in game one was a Chris Turner solo home run in the third inning, his first of the year.

Elbert carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning. The lefthander and former first-round draft pick of the Dodgers, received plenty of support as the Catfish got to Bombers starter Adam Blackley for six runs over four and one-third innings. DeWitt went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Hoffman had a pair of hits and scored twice.

Leading 6-0 going to the bottom of the sixth, Elbert's (2-2) no-hit dream ended when Logan Sorensen launched a home run to right field to open the frame.

The Bombers continue their eight-game homestand on Friday at 7:05pm as they host the Greensboro Grasshoppers (Florida Marlins affiliate) in the opener of a four-game series. Righthander Matt Goodson (2-4) will pitch for Greenville.

NOTES: Greenville batters struck out a total of 21 times in 14 innings.......the Bombers have now lost 4 of their last 5 games......SORENSEN's home run was his first of the season.......
