Catfish Sweep Doubleheader Against Greenville

GREENVILLE, SC—RHP Brandon Weeden tossed six strong innings leading the Catfish to a 7-2 win in Game 1 of a doubleheader tonight in Greenville and LHP Scott Elbert did the same in a 6-1 win in Game 2 to give the Catfish a doubleheader sweep tonight over the Greenville Bombers. The Catfish have won eight of their last ten and the road series win is the first of 2005. Tomorrow the Catfish return home for a four-game series against the Asheville Tourists (Colorado Rockies) starting at 7:00 PM.

3B Blake DeWitt homered to open the scoring for the Catfish in Game 1 in the second inning with a solo HR to deep right giving the Fish a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, RF Ryan Russ homered to left with the bases empty. CF Jamie Hoffmann ripped his second hit of the game later in the second inning, driving home C Gabriel Gutierrez and giving Columbus a 3-0 lead.

RHP Brandon Weeden retired the first eight batters of the game before allowing a solo HR to Greenville Chris Turner in the third to make it 3-1 Fish. Columbus took a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning on a single by 2B Travis Denker. While Weeden allowed a run in the sixth, he completed six innings for his fourth straight quality start, striking out nine while allowing just three hits. The Fish added three runs in the seventh with an RBI single from 1B David Nicholson and a two-run double by Denker to win the first game 7-2.

In the second game, the Fish jumped out to a 3-0 lead by scoring a run in each of the first three innings. DH Travis Denker drove home his fourth run of the doubleheader with a single to right field in the first. RF Ryan Russ singled home a run in the second, and SS Lucas May's sacrifice fly made it 3-0. LHP Scott Elbert retired the first eleven batters before an error in the 4th inning allowed the first Greenville hitter to reach. A three-run fifth made it 6-0 Catfish. Elbert took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before 1B Logan Sorenson's solo HR on the first pitch of the inning ended the no-hit bid and shutout. Elbert picked up his second straight with six innings of two-hit baseball, striking out eight to improve to 2-2.
