Kitchener Rangers News Release

The Kitchener Rangers defeated the hometown Brampton Battalion 2-1 in a shootout Thursday. Captain Michael Catenacci scored the winner, while John Gibson made 43 saves and was named the game's first star.

The Battalion out-shot the Rangers 10-9 through a scoreless first period.

Josh Sterk broke the deadlock with under four minutes to play in the second. Brampton netminder Keegan Wilson made the initial stop on Brent Pedersen but the Rangers centre raced in for the rebound and lifted a backhand shot over Wilson's glove hand. Sterk's fourth goal of the season was also assisted by Julian Melchiori.

Brampton continued to lead shots on goal in the second frame, with a 14-11 advantage.

The Battalion would tie it up with 31 seconds left on the clock. Dylan Blujus fired a hard, low shot that was redirected by Sam Carrick past Kitchener goalie John Gibson. Barclay Goodrow also assisted on the last minute goal that sent this game into overtime.

Brampton applied heavy pressure in the final frame, out-shooting the Rangers 17-2.

Neither team could close the game in overtime, so the meeting went to a shoot out. Each side fired three shots in the extra frame.

Michael Catenacci scored the lone goal of the shootout, sneaking the puck around the right skate of Wilson and leading the Rangers to their fourth consecutive victory.

Gibson stood tall between the pipes, stopping 43 of 44 shots and all three skaters in the shootout to pick up a win in his first game back from injury.

With the victory, Kitchener improves to 18-7-1-0 while the Battalion sit at 14-1-9-3.
