Biloxi Shuckers News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - A catchers balk with two outs in the top of the ninth was the difference for the Biloxi Shuckers (4-2) in their 4-3 win over the Montgomery Biscuits (2-3) on Wednesday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Tied at three in the top of the ninth, Dillon Thomas was hit by a pitch to start the inning. RHP Jose Disla (L, 0-1) then walked Patrick Leonard to put a pair of runners on base. Luis Aviles Jr. sacrificed both runners into scoring position for the first out before Cooper Hummel flied out to left. With Blake Allemand batting, Thomas broke for home, prompting catcher Rene Pinto to jump out of his crouch and into the path of Thomas. Allemand swung at the pitch and his bat caught the glove of Pinto, forcing the call of a catchers balk to score the go-ahead run and give Biloxi a 4-3 lead. RHP Nate Griep (S, 2) pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing just a single and striking out one for his second save of the season.
Montgomery jumped out to an early lead in the first two frames. Lucius Fox tripled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and scored on a groundout by Josh Lowe. In the second, Pinto delivered an RBI single to put the Biscuits up 2-0, but Montgomery left the bases loaded against RHP Marcos Diplan.
In his Double-A debut, LHP Brendan McKay sat down the first six batters he faced in order, striking out five in the first two frames. Hummel broke up the streak with a bang in the third, homering to left off McKay, Hummel's first home run at Double-A. Biloxi tied the game in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Aviles and went ahead on a wild pitch by McKay that allowed C.J. Hinojosa to score from third.
The Biscuits drew even again in the home half of the fourth. Miles Mastrobuoni walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Thomas Milone reached on an infield single and Mastrobuoni scored on a throwing error by Hinojosa, knotting the game at 3-3.
RHP Luke Barker spun 1.1 innings of scoreless relief before giving way to RHP Devin Williams (W, 2-0). In his second Double-A appearance, Williams allowed just one base runner on a single and struck out five over 3.0 scoreless frames.
Biloxi continues their five-game series with the Biscuits on Thursday night at 6:35 pm. The Shuckers are scheduled to send RHP Trey Supak (1-0, 0.00) to the mound against Biscuits RHP Arturo Reyes (1-0, 9.00). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
