Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., June 16, 2004) â Long Island Ducks team officials today announced they have come to contract terms with veteran minor league catcher Luis Rodriguez. Prior to joining Long Island, the 30-year-old saw action at the start of the 2004 season with the Toledo Mud Hens, the Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.
"We're excited to find someone at the catcher position with as much experience as Luis has," said Ducks general manager Michael Hirsch. "We anticipate him fitting in here very nicely."
2004 is Rodriguez's thirteenth year in professional baseball. He has spent each of the past four seasons at the AAA level with Pawtucket (Red Sox), Memphis (Cardinals) and Toledo. He owns a career batting average of .247 in 2,714 at bats with 51 home runs and 328 RBI. In 2003 with Memphis of the Pacific Coast League, Rodriguez made 67 starts behind the dish.
The Long Island Ducks play their home games at Citibank Park, and are in their fifth anniversary season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. They have filled their ballpark to over 100 percent capacity for four consecutive seasons and are one of the most successful minor league franchises in the country.
