State College Spikes News Release

AUBURN, N.Y. - Moises Castillo swatted the second pitch of the game for a home run, and Enmanuel Solano delivered another quality start on the mound, but the State College Spikes dropped a 5-1 decision to the Auburn Doubledays on Tuesday night at Falcon Park.

Castillo drove an 0-1 pitch from Auburn (20-30) starter Niomar Gomez to left field for the Spikes' (25-26) first leadoff home run of the year and his first of the season. The State College shortstop also notched his second consecutive multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Solano (1-7) took a tough-luck loss despite giving up just three runs on five hits and three walks over six innings. The right-hander produced his fourth start of six innings or more with three earned runs or less against him, but is now 1-3 in those games. Solano also struck out a season-high eight batters.

The Doubledays tied the game in the second on Eric Senior's RBI single, then moved ahead in the sixth when Jake Randa hit a two-run homer to right field, his third of the year, to make it 3-1.

In the seventh, Auburn extended its lead as a wild pitch scored Jack Dunn and Caldoli Sanfler's single brought home the last run of the game.

Doubledays reliever Gilberto Chu (2-1) picked up the win with three scoreless innings, yielding one hit and two walks while striking out two batters along the way.

The Spikes will now try to salvage the last game of a three-game series against the Doubledays as they conclude a six-game road trip with a 7:00 p.m. matchup on Wednesday night at Falcon Park. Right-hander Andre Pallante (1-0), the Cardinals' 2019 fourth-round draft choice out of UC Irvine, gets the mound call for State College. Auburn will go with right-hander Carlos Romero (0-3).

Following the conclusion of the road trip, the Spikes host a three-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs (Miami Marlins) from Thursday, August 8 through Saturday, August 10.

Highlights include Ladies Night with a Confer's Jewelers Gift Card Giveaway on Thursday, FIREWORKS presented by The Meadows to go with a "Happy Valley Grilled Stickies" Jersey Auction presented by PSECU to benefit Children's Miracle Network, a Myrtle Beach Trip Giveaway and Scout Night on Friday, and FIREWORKS on Ag Night presented by Local PA Dairy Famers with a special return engagement for the Cowboy Monkey Rodeo on Saturday.
