State College Spikes News Release
NILES, Ohio - Moises Castillo collected three of the five State College Spikes hits on Saturday night as their eight-game winning streak at Eastwood Field came to a close with a 6-4 defeat against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
The Spikes (13-9) had not lost at Eastwood Field since September 1, 2017 before Saturday's loss. State College had also won 11 straight against Mahoning Valley (12-10) and had taken three consecutive victories prior to Saturday's loss.
Castillo knocked in a run with his single in the fifth inning, clubbed a double in the ninth, and stole two bases.
The Scrappers hit three solo homers in the game, starting with Henderson De Oleo's shot to left field, his second long ball of the year, off Jeremy Randolph (0-1) to start the bottom of the second. Pedro Alfonseca then hit his first of the year off Randolph later in the same frame before Ray Delgado went deep to right off Adrian Mardueno in the fourth for his second homer of the season.
Randolph took the loss after yielding a total of three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 1 2/3 innings. Jack Ralston tossed two scoreless, one-hit innings of relief for State College.
Carlos Soto and Andrew Warner added base hits for the Spikes.
Mahoning Valley reliever Luis Valdez (2-1) picked up the win in relief with two innings of one-run ball. Valdez allowed one hit, two walks and a hit batsman over his tenure on the mound.
Tim Herrin (6) recorded the last five outs for the Scrappers to earn the save. Herrin gave up one hit and struck out one batter.
Despite the loss, the Spikes remained a 1/2 game back of the Batavia Muckdogs (Miami Marlins) for first place in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division.
State College is now set to head home and host Batavia in the first game of a three-game set at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park at 6:05 p.m. on Sunday. Right-hander Enmanuel Solano (1-2) will get the ball for the Spikes, while the Muckdogs have not yet announced a starting pitcher.
