July 30, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA- Heading into game two of a four game series at Veteran's Memorial Stadium, the Dayton Dragons (15-21, 45-61) were having an outstanding 2005 verses the Cedar Rapids Kernels (16-20, 46-60). The Dragons had won all five meetings between the two clubs in '05. Saturday night was not the same old song and dance as the Kernels Michael Collins knocked in three runs and Alexi Casilla racked up a five for five night at the plate, as Cedar Rapids pounded the Dragons 11-7 in front of 3,714.

The Kernels jumped on Dragons starter Juan Frias (L, 0-3) in the bottom of the first inning, picking up three hits and scoring three runs. Cedar Rapids picked up back-to-back hits to open up the game. Alexi Casilla led the bottom of the first off with a single and moved to third base on a double by Freddy Sandoval. Casilla scored on a sac fly from Michael Collins with Sandoval tagging and advancing to third on the play. Sandoval would come home on a ground ball by Juan LeBlanc. The RBI grounder was booted by Adam Rosales, allowing LeBlanc to reach. A stolen base by LeBlanc and a two out RBI single by Warner Madrigal made the Kernels lead 3-0 after one inning.

Karl Gelinas (W, 7-6) was knocked around in an appearance at Fifth Third Field back on May 15th. In 5.0 innings, the Dragons picked up 10 hits and scored six runs of the Cedar Rapids right hander. Saturday night was a different story, as Gelinas shut the Dayton ball club out for 4.2 innings. Dayton was not able to dent the dish against the Kernels until the top of the fifth inning on a Drew Anderson two out triple and an Adam Rosales RBI single to right. The RBI for the Dragons short stop was his first in the Midwest League.

Frias was chased in the bottom half of the fourth inning, after tossing 3.2 innings and allowing 10 hits before departing. The Kernels added a single run in the third off the Dayton starter and three more in the fourth. Jordan Renz knocked home the run in the third with an RBI single to run the score to 4-0. In the fourth, the Kernels picked up four hits and were aided by a pair of Dayton errors. Sandoval got the first run of the inning home with a RBI single. Collins knocked home another run with a fielder's choice. The Kernels catcher would later score in the inning on a Tonys Gutierrez throwing error to make the score 7-0 Cedar Rapids.

Gelinas was lifted after 6.0 innings of solid work; the right hander gave up one run, allowed six hits, struck out six and walked one. The relief for the Kernels was not nearly as stellar. The Dragons made a game of it with five runs in the eighth off a pair of CR pitchers. T.J. Stanton (ND) was roughed up for four runs in 1.0 innings of work. With the bases loaded an none out, Evan Conley picked up a two RBI pinch hit double to cut the lead to 9-3. Stanton was yanked in favor of Casey Mutter (ND). Cody Strait hammered Mutter's first pitch over the wall in left for a three run blast that closed the Dragons to within 9-6.

The Dayton bullpen could not keep Cedar Rapids off the board. Joe Wilson (ND) allowed a single run in the sixth inning and Alexander Farfan (ND) gave up one run in the seventh and two in the eighth, as the Kernels extended the lead to 11-6 heading into the top of the ninth. B.J. Szymanski added a solo HR in the top of the ninth inning to get the Dragons to within 11-7.

The Dragons and Kernels continue the four game series at Veteran's Memorial Stadium Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM. RHP Jon George will make the start for the Dragons, while the Kernels will throw RHP Nick Green. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM broadcasting the game live, beginning with the pre game show at 2:30 PM.
