Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays have announced a roster move effective immediately.

Righthanded starter Romelio Lopez has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to July 27. He is being replaced on the roster by righthanded reliever Chris Mason, the second round draft pick in the 2005 June draft by Tampa Bay.

Mason was drafted out of UNC Greensboro on June 7. The 56th overall pick in the draft and Cherryville, N.C. native comes to Southwest Michigan from short-season Hudson Valley with a 2.40 ERA in nine relief outings. Mason was a third baseman and hit .324 with seven homers and 15 stolen bases this season at UNCG. Mason broke the Bessemer City High School records for strikeouts and innings pitched held by Kevin Millwood in his four years.

The 6'7" Lopez was selected by Tampa Bay in the 18th round of the 2002 draft. Lopez has struggled through two starts with the Devil Rays since arriving from Hudson Valley on July 15. This is the 19th Devil Rays transaction this season and the first time the Rays have received a 2005 draft pick.
