Crist Goes the Distance in Bees Win
July 30, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - Kyle Crist pitched his first professional complete game, and the first by a Burlington pitcher this season, as the Burlington Bees (21-15, 55-51) snapped their four-game losing streak and beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (19-17, 58-48) 9-1 at Community Field tonight. The win evens this series 1-1.
Crist (9-2) retired the first 13 batters of the game before Marshall Hubbard broke up the perfect game with a single to left. The runner didn't last long as Crist got Rob Johnson to bounce into an inning-ending double play right afterward. Crist faced the minimum through seven and a third innings before Hubbard struck again with solo homer over the scoreboard in right-center for the Rattlers' only run. Josh Womack had a pinch-hit double in the ninth for the final Rattlers' hit. Crist didn't walk a single batter and struck out six. He improves to 6-0 at Community Field this year.
The Bees gave Crist plenty of run support, breaking through against Rattlers' starter Mark Lowe in the bottom of the second. Lowe hit Geraldo Valentin with a pitch to start the inning and then walked Eddie Solis. Cody Cure drove both in with a double to the wall in deep left-center field. After a strikeout, Irving Falu also doubled into left-center to drive in Cure. Falu then stole third and scored on a single by Ed Lucas to extend the lead to 4-0. After a base hit by Damaso Espino, a passed ball moved the runners to second and third before Rusty Brown singled to center to drive in Lucas with the Bees' fifth run. Lowe would get out of the inning when Brian McFall popped out with Brown running from first, and the Rattlers were able to get the double play.
The Bees capped the scoring against Lowe in the fourth. Lowe hit Darwinson Salazar with a pitch, walked Falu, and Lucas singled to load the bases with nobody out. Espino drove in Salazar with a sacrifice fly to center to a 6-0 lead. After Brown bounced out, McFall blasted a three-run homer to left to clear the bases and extend the lead to 9-0. The homer was McFall's ninth of the season. Lowe (6-4) left after four and suffered the loss. Donny Langdon followed with three scoreless innings in relief and John Lockwood pitched a perfect eighth.
The Bees and Rattlers continue this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. RH Justin Sherman (3-4, 2.76) will start for the Bees against RH Aaron Jensen (6-10, 5.29) for the Rattlers on a Louisa Communications Kids Day at Community Field. Little Leaguers and Boy and Girl Scouts in uniform get in free, a church bulletin gets $2 off admission for each member of your family, and kids can run the bases after the game. Mediacom will have giveaway items for fans on their way into the game as well. The gates open at 1:00 and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40.
