Lansing Lugnuts News Release
SOUTH BEND- Christian Snavely extended his hitting streak to 12 games and drove in four runs and Chi-Hung Cheng(5-6), Aaron Tressler and Scott Roy combined to pitch the first shutout in a nine-inning game for the Lugnuts(54-51,17-19) since their Opening Day win over Fort Wayne, a 5-0 shutout over South Bend(61-45, 20-16) on Saturday night at Coveleski Stadium.
Snavely opened the scoring in the third by following Jason Armstrong's two-out single with a two-run homer to right off South Bend starter Koley Kolberg(4-6), making it 2-0.
In the fifth, Snavely picked up a two-run single to left center, scoring David Corrente and Eugenio Velez.
That proved enough offense for Cheng, who worked into the sixth inning to get the win. He walked five hitters, but got out of several jams and stranded a total of seven Silver Hawk runners. Tressler retired Travis Gulick on a groundout to end the sixth and took the shutout through the eighth inning. He worked 2.1 innings, allowing just a walk.
Kolberg gave up four runs in five innings while allowing six hits to take the loss, remaining winless since July 3rd, a span of five starts.
In the ninth, Yuber Rodriguez walked and went to second on a wild pitch by Mark Rosen. Three batters later, Armstrong's RBI groundout scored Rodriguez to make it 5-0.
Scott Roy finished off the shutout, just Lansing's third of the season, by striking out the side in the ninth.
Snavely was 2-5 to pace the offensive attack for Lansing while four different Silver Hawks collected single hits for South Bend.
Lansing will go for the series lead in Sunday's game. The Lugnuts will send Danny Core to the hill and South Bend will counter with Kellen Raab. Game time from Coveleski Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m. EST.
