Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Wilmington, DE - Winston-Salem turned to their ace to snap their four-game losing streak as Anthony Carter tossed six shutout innings and helped the Dash defeat Wilmington 3-1 in the series finale on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium. Carter (11-5) limited the Blue Rocks to four singles, a walk and matched his season-high with nine strikeouts to collect his league-leading 11th win.
Winston-Salem's offense, which was relegated to two runs on eight hits in the first three games of this series, jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning. Second baseman Dale Mollenhauer and shortstop Greg Paiml led off with back-to-back singles against Blue Rocks starter Alex Caldera. Left fielder Tyler Kuhn grounded into a double-play that left Mollenhauer at third base with two outs. Brent Morel followed with a clutch run-scoring double to put the Dash in front 1-0.
Logan Johnson staked Winston-Salem to a two-run lead when he led off the second inning with a solo home run. It was the 10th round-tripper of the season for the Dash catcher. The Blue Rocks finally pushed a run across in the bottom of the seventh inning against reliever Nate Jones. Nick Van Stratten led off with a walk and a sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Ryan Eigsti followed with an RBI single to trim Wilmington's deficit to 2-1. But that is all the offense the Blue Rocks would muster.
Winston-Salem added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Tyler Kuhn led off with a triple against Zach Peterson and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 advantage. The Dash bullpen made the score stand as Hector Santiago worked a scoreless eighth inning and Santo Luis struck out the side in order in the ninth to garner his 9th save of the season.
Caldera (4-10) surrendered two runs on five hits in 5.2 innings, but suffered the loss for Wilmington.
The Dash continues their seven-game road swing when they travel to Frederick to take on the Keys in the three-game series over the weekend. Winston-Salem will hand the ball to LHP Justin Edwards (3-2, 4.84) in the opener on Friday night, while Frederick is expected to start RHP Alex Caldera (4-9, 5.78). The first pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Dash returns to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Tuesday, August 18 when they open a four-game, three-day series with a doubleheader against the Potomac Nationals. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. For more information on all the upcoming promotions or to purchase single-game tickets, visit www.wsdash.com or by call the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
