Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Kinston jumped out to a 6-0 lead and staved off a late Lynchburg rally to post a 10-8 victory in the rubber match of a three-game series at City Stadium Thursday night. The Hillcats will take on Myrtle Beach in the opener of a three-game set at 7:05 p.m. Friday in Lynchburg.

The K-Tribe wasted no time in seizing control of the game. Tim Fedroff hit a one-out single off Cats starter Ronald Uviedo in the top of the first and took second when Uviedo walked Cord Phelps. Ole Sheldon knocked in Fedroff with an RBI single and Doug Pickens followed with a three-run home run that gave Kinston a 4-0 advantage.

The Indians tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the fourth when Roman Pena smacked a two-run home run off Cats reliever Nate Adcock, which made it a 6-0 contest.

Lynchburg (19-27, 64-51) finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Eric Fryer belted a solo home run leading off the inning and Jose De Los Santos followed with a single. Chase d'Arnaud laced a double down the left field line that plated De Los Santos. d'Arnaud stole third base later in the inning and scored on a wild pitch from Jonathan Holt, which reduced the deficit to 6-3.

Kinston (20-26, 47-67) answered with four runs in the top of the sixth. Cats reliever Chris Cullen issued walks to Kyle Haines and Pena before allowing an RBI single to Lucas Montero that scored Haines. Tim Fedroff followed with a two-run triple and a throwing error by Jordy Mercer at the end of the play allowed Fedroff to score and make it a 10-3 game.

The Cats drew closer on the strength of three doubles in the seventh. Josh Harrison hit a one-out double and scored on an RBI double by Mercer. Kris Watts roped an RBI two-bagger later in the frame that plated Mercer and brought the Cats within five.

Trailing 10-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Lynchburg mounted one last comeback attempt. Mercer reached on a one-out walk from Kinston reliever Santo Frias, who then plunked Jamie Romak. Watts delivered an RBI single that scored Mercer. After Frias retired Matt Hague, Alex Presley drew a walk to load the bases. Fryer hit an RBI single and Watts scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to bring Lynchburg within two at 10-8.

But Frias struck out De Los Santos to end the game. Holt (3-5) worked 2 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win for Kinston. Uviedo (5-5) took the loss for Lynchburg after allowing four hits and four earned runs in just one inning of work.

Kinston clinched a series victory with the win and a split in the season series as each team won 10 of the 20 ballgames against each other in 2009.

Lynchburg will attempt to bounce back with a win in the first game of a three-game series against Myrtle Beach at City Stadium. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. Friday.

The game marks the start of Pirates weekend in the Hill City. The first 1,000 fans to arrive at Calvin Falwell Field on Friday will receive a Nate McLouth bobblehead courtesy of Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg. Additionally, the Hillcats will wear replica Pirates jerseys in the game and fans will have the opportunity to purchase the game-worn jerseys through an in-game silent auction. Kent Tekulve, the Pirates career leader in saves with 158, will be in attendance to throw out the first pitch and sign autographs for the fans.
